British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) was created in 1960 after government pressure to rationalise an industry where ‘far too many companies were competing for a diminishing number of contracts’. Out of this policy came the decision to only offer new contracts to organisations that had been formed through various mergers and take-overs.

The human activity that surrounds aircraft is called aviation. The science of aviation, including designing and building aircraft, is called aeronautics. Crewed aircraft are flown by an onboard pilot, but unmanned aerial vehicles may be remotely controlled or self-controlled by onboard computers. Aircraft may be classified by different criteria, such as lift type, aircraft propulsion, usage and others.

The following five years, from BlĂ©riot’s Channel flight to the beginning of World War I, were a period of spectacular growth and development in aviation. Concerned about the potential of military aviation, European leaders invested heavily in the new technology, spending large sums on research and development and working to establish and support the aircraft and engine industries in their own countries.
